This article explains how to create an order limit in SmartOrderLimit to control how many items customers can purchase. You can apply limits to specific products or to the entire cart.
No coding is required.
Before You Begin
Make sure that:
The Product Sync is completed.
The Theme App Extension is enabled. For detailed instructions, refer to Enabling the Theme App Extension for SmartOrderLimit
Open SmartOrderLimit
From your Shopify admin, go to Apps
Click SmartOrderLimit
Create a New Order Limit
1. In the SmartOrderLimit dashboard, click Create New Limit
2. Select Advanced Limits
Configure the Order Limit
Set Basic Limit Details
Name the limit
This name appears in the dashboard.Choose when the limit starts
Activate immediately – The limit is enforced as soon as it is saved.
Activate on selected date and time – The limit starts at a scheduled date and time.
Activate later – The limit is saved as a draft and can be activated later.
Choose when the limit ends
Deactivate on a specific date and time – The limit automatically stops on the set date and time.
Do not deactivate – The limit remains active until manually disabled.
Set continuous activity
Continuously active – The limit applies at all times while active.
Only during specific dates and times – The limit applies only during the selected schedule.
Choose What the Limit Applies To
You can apply limits to specific products or to the whole cart.
Specific Products
Apply limits based on quantity, amount (does not convert the currency due to exchange rates movement), and/or weight (automatically converts product weight) for selected products or variants.
You can add products by:
Adding specific products
Adding a collection
Using filters to automatically include products that match your criteria
Whole Cart
Apply limits based on:
Total number of items
Total cart amount
Total cart weight
Set Limit Conditions
You can add up to two limit conditions per rule. The first limit must be met before proceeding to the second limit.
For Specific Products
Limit quantity per product – Restricts how many units of each product can be purchased
Limit amount per product – Restricts the total amount per product
Limit weight per product – Restricts the total weight per product
For the Whole Cart
Limit number of items in the cart
Limit total cart amount
Limit total cart weight
To add another condition, click Add Limit Condition.
Save and Activate the Limit
Review your settings
Click:
Save to activate the limit immediately. If Activate Later is selected, the limit will remain inactive after saving. If Scheduled is selected, the status will become Scheduled.
Save Draft to activate it later
What Customers See
When a limit is reached:
Customers are prevented from proceeding to checkout
A clear message explains what needs to be adjusted
Limits are enforced before checkout
Best Practices
Use product-level limits for high-demand or limited-stock items
Use cart-level limits to prevent bulk or abusive orders
Test the limit by adding items to the cart after saving
Troubleshooting
If an order limit isn’t working:
Make sure the Theme App Extension is enabled
Make sure the limit is enabled
Confirm the correct products or cart settings are selected
Refresh the storefront and test again
