Types of Order Limits You Can Create

SmartOrderLimit allows you to control orders in your Shopify store using three core limit types: Quantity, Amount, and Weight. These limits help you manage inventory, prevent abuse, and enforce your business rules effectively.

Below is an overview of each order limit type and how they can be used.

1. Quantity Limits

Quantity limits control how many items a customer can add to their cart or purchase in a single order.

What You Can Limit

  • Total number of items in the cart

  • Quantity per product or variant (if enabled)

Common Use Cases

  • Prevent bulk purchases

  • Limit high-demand or low-stock products

  • Enforce minimum or maximum purchase quantities

Examples

  • Minimum of 2 items per order

  • Maximum of 5 items per order

  • Only 1 unit per product allowed

2. Amount (Order Value) Limits

Amount limits restrict orders based on the cart subtotal.

Supported Currencies

  • USD (US Dollar)

  • EUR (Euro)

ℹ️ Other currencies are not supported at this time.

What You Can Limit

  • Minimum order amount

  • Maximum order amount

Common Use Cases

  • Enforce minimum purchase requirements

  • Prevent unusually large or high-risk orders

  • Control order values during promotions

Examples

  • Minimum order amount of $25 USD

  • Maximum order amount of €1,000 EUR

3. Weight Limits

Weight limits restrict orders based on the total cart weight.

Available Weight Units

You can set weight limits using the following units:

  • Pounds (lb)

  • Ounces (oz)

  • Kilograms (kg)

  • Grams (g)

Automatic Unit Conversion

SmartOrderLimit automatically converts all product weights to the selected unit. This ensures accurate limit enforcement even if your products use different weight units in Shopify.

What You Can Limit

  • Minimum total cart weight

  • Maximum total cart weight

Common Use Cases

  • Control shipping costs

  • Prevent oversized or heavy orders

  • Enforce carrier or delivery limitations

Examples

  • Maximum cart weight of 20 kg

  • Maximum cart weight of 44 lb

  • Minimum cart weight of 500 g

Enforcing Multiple Limits (Up to Two)

SmartOrderLimit lets you apply up to two limits within a single rule. Both limits must be met for the customer to proceed to checkout.

How It Works

  • You can combine any two of the following:

    • Quantity

    • Amount

    • Weight

  • If either limit is violated, the order is blocked and a warning message is shown.

Examples

  • Maximum 5 items and maximum $500 order amount

  • Maximum 10 items and maximum 20 kg total weight

  • Minimum $50 order amount and minimum 2 items

How Order Limits Are Enforced

When a customer reaches or exceeds a configured limit:

  • A warning message is displayed on the storefront

  • The customer is prevented from proceeding to checkout
